Dave’s Media Menagerie

Hello,
My name is Dave, and music has always been a great interest to me. I mostly taught myself how to play the guitar, however I have had some extensive classical training since then. Song writing has become a great passion of mine recently as well. There is nothing I enjoy more than making people happy with the words of a song that I myself, and others can all relate to in a very real manner, and expressing true emotions through my playing. Please join me each month here at Flip Side Music as I share with you the music selections I enjoy! I will also be sharing with you my selections of movies that I think you will find of interest.
Videos for my picks can be found at Flip Side to Music’s Broadcasting channel!

La Femme Musketeer
By: Dave
La Femme Musketeer is a unique turn on many of the vast legends based around Jacques D’Artagnan. Though in this turn Jacques is much older and has taught his daughter Valentine well in the ways of the sword before the time has come to where Valentine must ultimately strike out on her own. She now possesses her father’s sword and a letter of introduction writ to Commander Flint, and now is in eager hopes to acclaim her fortune she long seeks to desire in Paris.
Before, a woman has never before been appointed the legendary title of swordsman, thus striking up Valentine’s determination to take on a extremely deadly mission in hopes that she will ultimately prove her worth. The mission consists of a daring rescue of the soon-to-be bride of King Louis XIV who in which has been kidnapped by a fearsome band of miscreants. She later teams up with the sons of the Legendary Musketeers who rode with her father, and discovers that the contents of the letter could ultimately destroy the good reputation of the King.
Though being captured and framed for murder. Valentine must trust in the combined skills of her fellow musketeers in order to complete the mission. Even more so to survive the ordeal, bring the princess back to the King, and bring the Lady Bolton who was in original possession of the letter to justice for her treason and treachery.
Even though this two part made for television film only reached 3 stars, I found it to be considerably higher. The delivery from the lead roles Valentine (Susie Amy), Jacques D’Artagnan (Michael York), Cardinal Mazarin (Gerard Depardieu), Porthos (John Rhys-Davies), Gaston (Casper Zafer), Athos (Christopher Cazenove), and countless others were extremely well done. The story was well told, and the pieces of humor throughout the film gives it the touch of a classic Musketeer film with a modern interpretation that the whole family can enjoy.
Here’s the trailer for it, took me a while but I finally found one. This movie was great.

Kingdom of Heaven
By: Dave
Kingdom of Heaven is a epic drama loosely based on events that took place during the Crusades of the 12th Century. Balian, who happens to be a humble French blacksmith, has been seeking for a reason to continue on following the deaths of his children, and of his wife who had committed suicide out of grief. One day Balian is approached by a Knight and Baron named Godfrey of Ibelin who has returned home from serving in the East.
Upon the approach, Godfrey informs Balian that he is Balian’s true father, and asks for his thanks and accompaniment across the seas to Jerusalem alongside him and his forces to help defend the Holy City. Balian accepts, and after a while finally reaches the East by sea, where he would yet again face another confrontation before reaching the Holy City of Jerusalem. Upon his arrival he finds there to be a fragile peace between peoples, thanks to the wisdom of the Christian Monarch King Baldwin IV, his second in command Tiberias, and Saladin.
Though violent agitators on both sides are desperately eager to end the peace, Balian has pledged his allegiance to Baldwin IV, and in turn like his father aids in the defense of the Holy City. There has been two version upon it’s release, the theatrical release, and it’s director’s cut. The director’s cut contains an additional hour of footage which does help to piece the film together a bit better, however it still has it’s flaws when history is portrayed. All in all though, this film is quite good for what it is.

Buddy Guy
Article by: Dave
© July 2009
Buddy Guy is considered a very important exponent in Chicago Styled, and Traditional blues. He has been an inspiration to countless guitarists including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Buddy is widely known for his showmanship, techniques, and interactions with live audiences wherever he may be performing at the time.
Buddy has often been known to bring someone on stage from the audience to play alongside of him, and or to play a solo or two. Another part of many of Buddy’s performances include segments where he will leave the stage entirely, and walk throughout the spectator areas among the audience while continuing to play the guitar. Occasionally he may say comments to indicate to the audience that it’s really him doing the playing.
Buddy Guy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Julie Roberts
Julie Roberts
Article by: Dave
© June 2009
In 2004, Julie was signed to Mercury Nashville. Alongside her debut single “Break Down Here”, which went on to become a Top 20 hit on the Billboard titled Hot Country Singles & Tracks, which is now Hot Country Songs. Including her self titled debut cd which also hit shelves in 2004, brought a unique new atmosphere, tone, quality, and style that in hopes we shall be hearing for a very long time. She expresses so much emotion, soul, and enthusiasm on this album, that one can truly feel every track on the album’s listing.
Julie’s second album “Men & Mascara” was released in June of 2006. “Men and Mascara” hosted two singles which include the title track “Men & Mascara”, and a cover of Saving Jane’s “Girl Next Door”. Even though neither single charted, the album continued to share the same excellent qualities as Julie’s self titled debut album “Julie Roberts”.

Dave’s May Picks

Article by: Dave
© May 2009
Their new album American Soldier is more than a epic masterpiece. As Tate had interviewed countless veterens ranging from World War II, Vietname, to the present times in Iraq. This album becomes those men, and women’s stories through a lyrical process viewed through all of their perspectives. American Soldier is a revelation of purpose, with such a powerful mission statement, making this album a true march for an understanding.
The one thing this album clearly is not, is political. This is a dedication, and a honest tribute to the men and women who have, or are serving the armed forces. As of to date, this is some of their best work. Where a vision can rival music, there will always be Queensryche.

Dave’s April Picks

Anouk Stotijn-Teeuwe
Article by: Dave
© April 2009
Anouk’s mother was a blues singer, which peaked her interest into music. Anouk would initially sing at parties, and weddings with the band Shotgun Wedding. Prior to meeting a friend of her ex-husband’s, who initially believed Anouk to have talent, there were a few songs written for her. It wasn’t until September 5, 1997 when her second single was released, which ultimately remained on the top of Dutch music charts for many weeks. That single was titled Nobody’s Wife, along with her debut album titled Together Alone, which also ended up being a huge success. Anouk is currently teaching at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.

Jamey Johnson
Article by: Dave
© April 2009
Jamey is a singer-songwriter not content with providing hits for others. He has a very powerful drive to sing, record, and perform his own songs the way he sees fit. His songs truely paint pictures into one’s mind allowing the listener, or reader to feel the songs in their entirety.
His delivery of each song is truely unique. There is no doubt that Jamey has a definite sound of his own. From the sad songs, to the funny sad songs, his latest album is truely lonesome. That Lonsesome Song record was recorded following a deep period of isolation, and a introspection. The composition of lyrical craftsmanship put forth into that album is beyond sensational. Jamey is truely a poet among poets, and a poet this world has not seen for some time.
