A Day on the Green – Blondie and The Pretenders

They’re two of music’s most acclaimed bands boasting two of music’s most compelling front women – Deborah Harry leading the wondrous Blondie and Chrissie Hynde fronting the mighty Pretenders. As a double-bill, it’s a world first! It’s also an absolute cracker and that’s exactly what fans can savour when Blondie & The Pretenders co-headline a November/December tour of ‘a day on the green’ winery shows.

Both The Pretenders and Blondie have enjoyed great success in Australia, fuelled by a stream of timeless Top Ten hits and the popularity of Hynde and Harry. Both ladies have always escaped the usual cliches of women in rock and are unquestionably two of the most important and influential women to have graced the stage. As co-headliners, the bands will alternate in closing the shows.

Blondie emerged from the late 70′s New York punk scene and quickly became music, style and pop culture icons selling more than 40 million albums. They scored hits with reggae, rock/disco, hip hop and pop songs bursting with great hooks and brilliant, ironic lyrics. ‘Heart Of Glass’ was Blondie’s first US #1 in 1978 opening the floodgates to a run of 14 Top Ten US hits.

The Pretenders are undoubtedly a special band with a special place in history. With hits like ‘Talk Of The Town’, ‘Kid’, ‘Back On The Chain Gang’, ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’, ‘Middle Of The Road’, ‘Message Of Love’, ‘ I’ll Stand By You’, ‘Stop Your Sobbing’ and ‘Brass In Pocket’, The Pretenders may have been rockin’ for 30 years but their authenticity has never diminished.

As always ‘a day on the green’ is pleased to showcase two Australian artists as support acts, Melbourne five-piece Little Red and Magic Dirt’s Adalita.

Metal legend Ronnie James Dio dead at 67
By WAYNE PARRY, AP

http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20100516/US.Obit.Ronnie.James.Dio/

Ronnie James Dio, whose soaring vocals, poetic lyrics and mythic tales of a never-ending struggle between good and evil broke new ground in heavy metal, died Sunday, according to a statement from his wife and manager. He was 67.

Dio revealed last summer that he was suffering from stomach cancer shortly after wrapping up a tour in Atlantic City, N.J., with the latest incarnation of Black Sabbath, under the name Heaven And Hell.

“Today my heart is broken,” Wendy Dio wrote on the singer’s site, adding he died at 7:45 a.m. “Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.

“Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all,” Wendy Dio continued. “We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us … Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.”

The statement was confirmed by publicist Maureen O’Connor, who said Dio died in Los Angeles. He had been treated at a Houston hospital, according to his site.

Though Dio had recently undergone his seventh chemotherapy treatment, he was hopeful to perform again. Earlier this month, Heaven And Hell canceled its summer tour, but Dio did not view being sidelined as a permanent thing.

“Wendy, my doctors and I have worked so hard to make it happen for all of you, the ones we care so much about, that this setback could be devastating, but we will not let it be,” he said in a statement. “With your continued love and support, we … will carry on and thrive. There will be other tours, more music, more life and much more magic.”

Dio rose to fame in 1975 as the first lead singer of Rainbow, the heavy metal band put together by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who had just quit Deep Purple.

Dio then replaced legendary vocalist Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1980 with the critically acclaimed album “Heaven And Hell,” considered by many critics to be one of the finest heavy metal albums of all time. His on-again, off-again tenure with Black Sabbath touched off an intense debate among fans as to which singer was the true essence of the band — a discussion that lasted until his death.

He also enjoyed a successful solo career with his self-titled band, Dio, in between his three stints with Black Sabbath (1980-82; 1992; and 2007-2009, when the band toured as Heaven And Hell, to differentiate it from Osbourne-led versions of Sabbath).

Many of his most memorable songs revolved around the struggle between good and evil, including his signature tune “Heaven And Hell.” He also drew heavily on medieval imagery in songs like “Neon Knights,” “Killing The Dragon” and “Stargazer.”

“He possessed one of the greatest voices in all of heavy metal, and had a heart to match it,” said Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French, whose band toured with Dio since 1983, and was to do so again this summer at European rock festivals. “He was the nicest, classiest person you would ever want to meet.”

Dio organized an all-star charity collaboration in 1986 called “Hear N’ Aid” to raise money for famine relief in Africa, styled on the successful “We Are The World” campaign of a few years earlier.

His solo hits included “Rainbow In The Dark,” “The Last In Line” and “Holy Diver.”

In addition to his wife, Dio is survived by son Daniel; grandchildren Julie and Joey; and father Pat.

AP Music Writer Nekesa Mumbi Moody contributed to this story.

Singer Lena Horne Dies at age 92

Lena Mary Calhoun Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010)
Lena Horne died Sunday night in a New York hospital. She was 92.
Her father’s name was Edwin F. Horne. Her mother was an actress, Edna Louise Calhoun Scottron.

She is survived by her daughter journalist and author Gail Lumet Buckley, whose articles have appeared in Vogue Magazine (USA) and The Los Angeles Times (CA, USA); Buckley has researched and authored two books “The Hornes: An American Family” (New American Library, 1986) and “American Patriots: The Story of Blacks in the Military from the Revolution to Desert Storm” (Random House, 2001).

Lena Horne, who was the first black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio and who went on to achieve international fame as a singer. But even though she also went on to star in nightclubs and on Broadway, it would take almost half a century before America would fully embrace Lena Horne – because throughout her prime performing years, neither Hollywood nor the music business was ready to give a “colored girl” a full fair shot in the mainstream.

She was awarded 2 Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 6282 Hollywood Boulevard and for Motion Pictures at 6250 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California. Horne was famous for her signature song, “Stormy Weather.” And was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1991.

Yusuf to tour Australia / New Zealand!

Yusuf returns to the Australian Stage after 36 years and will tour New Zealand for the first time ever this June.

For a great many admirers in Australia it seemed unlikely that the artist they knew and loved as Cat Stevens would return to the stage and that his timeless songs would reach them in anything other than tribute shows. Never stop believing, as they say. Following his successful short tour of UK and Ireland, he’s decided to accept the offer made by Paul Dainty, his old promoter, to come back and tour again for his fans.

From his home in Dubai Yusuf said, ‘I’m very excited to get back to Australia. There’s a lot of history between me and my journey there. I was given some books on Rumi and Numerology in Sydney back in 74. It was all of part of my Road to Findout. I’ll have the same band as my UK Tour, and Alun Davies will be with me again.’

The dates are as follows:

PERTH ? Thursday 10 June – Challenge Stadium

ADELAIDE ? Sunday 13 June – Adelaide Entertainment Centre

MELBOURNE ? Wednesday 16 June – Rod Laver Arena

SYDNEY ? Monday 21 June – Sydney Entertainment Centre

BRISBANE ? Saturday 26 June – Brisbane Entertainment Centre

AUCKLAND –Tuesday 29 June – Vector Arena

CHRISTCHURCH ? Friday 2 July – Westpac Arena

Peter Steele (1962 – 2010)

Peter Steele of heavy metal band Type O Negative has died at age 48. Steele (born Petrus Ratajczyk), the burly 6’7″ bassist and lead vocalist of the Brooklyn goth-metal band, formed Type O in the early ’90s after stints in several other groups, including the hardcore act Carnivore. The Iconic front man of Brooklyn goth-metal legends Type O Negative, passed away at 6pm yesterday April 14, 2010 due to heart failure.

His dramatic baritone voice carried foreboding lyrics about death and despair over electronic chaos and bottom-heavy guitars, proving to become not only the band’s signature, but a sound unmatched ever since Type O’s inception. With profound distaste and disgust for both humanity and political correctness, Type O Negative never changed with the times – the times changed with them.

Our condolences to his family and friends and he will be greatly missed in the world of music!~Tracy Lewis

HEADTRONICS
The Debut Tour 2010

“Logic’s smokin’ beats, with Freekbass’ funky basslines, is topped off with Molitz’ otherworldly keyboards.”

Spawned at last summer’s Universal Church of Love and Music Funk Festival, brand-spankin’-new funk trio, Headtronics, will be giving funk fans a taste of their collaborative efforts this April. Named by legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins, Headtronics consists of three of today’s best touring funk musicians, including Freekbass (7 time Cincinnati music award winner) , turntablist extraordinaire DJ Logic, and keyboardist Steve Molitz (Particle, Phil Lesh and Friends).

After a mind-blowing on-stage jam session, the chemistry between these three musicians was undeniable. A band would be born. “It turned out to be one of those magical musical moments, so we decided to play some full shows together,” said Freekbass. Funk and electronica fans everywhere should keep an eye and an ear out for Headtronics, one of the most exciting new projects to hit the scene in years.

Lady Gaga @ Adelaide Entertainment Centre
When: Tuesday, 2010/03/30
Where: Adelaide Entertainment Centre – , Adelaide, SA Australia
Cost/Tickets: $ – Search 4 tickets, Seating, floorplan,

Lady Gaga returns to Australia in March 2010 for a much-demanded headline tour. The Australian tour will feature a spectacular new arena production and full band.

Following her spectacular performances with The Pussycat Dolls earlier this year, the divine Ms. Gaga has been tearing up stages around the world.

During August she was one of the stars at both Japan’s Summersonic Festival and the UK’s V Festivals and will shortly be undertaking a co-headline U.S. tour with Kanye West.

2009 has been hailed the Year Of Gaga as the enigmatic superstar broke records and topped charts around the globe.

Debut album ‘The Fame’ reached the top ten in over 20 countries worldwide, with Australia the first to embrace the inexplicable Lady Gaga, clocking up triple platinum sales in just a few months as she placed five singles in the top 50 selling Australian singles of this year.

Lady Gaga’s debut boasts massive hits – the latest ‘Paparazzi’ and previous infectious ARIA 1s ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Poker Face’.

Back home in the US, Lady Gaga became the first artist in nearly 10 years to reach the summit of the Billboard Hot 100 with her first two chart entries, and became only the third artist in the 16-year history of the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart to collect three 1 songs from a debut album – ‘Just Dance’, ‘Poker Face’ and ‘LoveGame’.

While Lady Gaga sets the charts alight, its on stage where her story truly comes to life. A shifting artscape of the past, present and future, a live performance by Lady Gaga leaves you wondering how music survived without her.

Original at: http://wots-on.info/whats-on/?event=Al_Di_Meola_World_Sinfonia–Parramatta–NSW–Australia–000A1xb–Live_Music.Jazz–2010-03-30

American guitarist Al Di Meola is a giant of jazz!

Al Di Meola World Sinfonia blends world, jazz, classical, and tango music with Middle Eastern overtones; an exhilarating mix complete with sophisticated rhythms, haunting melodies, and thrilling guitar action.
As well as an extensive list of headline concerts around Australia and New Zealand throughout March 2010, Al Di Meola World Sinfonia has been added to the Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival.

Al Di Meola holds the most prestigious guitar awards from the highest rated guitar poll in the world, Guitar Player Magazine, and has garnered a 25-year reputation as one of the most prominent virtuosos in modern instrumental jazz.

In 1974 he was a student at Berklee School of Music in Boston when he received a life-changing call from pianist Chick Corea to join cutting edge ensemble Return To Forever, known for its uncompromising musical exploration.

Al debuted with the band at Carnegie Hall, and the next night played before 40,000 at an Atlanta jazz festival, and he was only 19 years old when he won his first Grammy Award and re-defined the electric guitar’s place in jazz.

In 1976 Di Meola put together his own outfit which featured a stellar cast including drummers Steve Gadd and Lenny White, bassist Anthony Jackson and Jaco Pastorius, keyboardists Jan Hammer, Barry Miles and Chick Corea plus percussionist Mingo Lewis, to record seven albums with Columbia Records.
1980 marked the triumph of the acoustic guitar trio with Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin and their debut album Friday Night in San Francisco, sold more than two million units.

The virtuoso guitarists toured from 1980 to 1983, releasing the studio album Passion, Grace and Fire in 1982, and in 1995, they reunited for a third recording, Guitar Trio, followed by another triumphant world tour.
In early 1996, Di Meola formed a new trio with the violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and RTF bandmate Stanley Clarke called The Rite of Strings.

Al reunited with the original members of Return To Forever, keyboardist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, and drummer Lenny White, for a world tour in 2008 that was one of the biggest jazz events of the year.
But for now Al’s main focus remains his World Sinfonia: “I’m more interested now in moving forward with the World Sinfonia, which has really developed into something beautiful. For me, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve done in a long, long time. You don’t have the overbearing volume with this band. Instead you have a rich harmonic kind of music with lots of improvisation; you have a music that is emotional. What I’m doing now is just completely satisfying, like a phenomenal meal and a great glass of vintage wine.”

Di Meola has further expanded his world music vocabulary after touring Morocco with World Sinfonia.
He explained before embarking that the tour would “afford me the chance to jam with some of the local musicians there. I’m wide open to that kind of collaboration now. I’ve done some jamming back in New York at a world music club in the East Village called Drom with a Turkish clarinet virtuoso named Husnu Senlendiric. I find that I have a real affinity for the music of the Middle East.”

Ernie Ball Play Crossroads Contest Launches Today
Musicians Compete For Chance To Play 2010 Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Fest

Beginning today, unsigned musicians can enter the Ernie Ball Play Crossroads contest at www.playcrossroads.com to compete for a chance to perform live on the Ernie Ball Village Stage at the 2010 Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival (presented by T-Mobile), Saturday, June 26 at Toyota Park in Chicago.

The day-long festival benefits the Crossroads Centre Antigua and will feature music from the legendary Eric Clapton and friends, including The Allman Brothers Band, BB King, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Steve Winwood, Vince Gill, ZZ Top and more.

To enter the contest–also hosted by Ernie Ball partners Premier Guitar, Guitar Center and Reverb Nation–musicians register at www.playcrossroads.com by creating a profile including 1-5 MP3 files, photos and a bio. The winning artist or band will receive roundtrip airfare to Chicago, hotel and a 30-minute performance slot on the Ernie Ball Village Stage, which will also feature inspirational master-class sessions from Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph, Otis Taylor and more. The winning artist will also receive a full Ernie Ball Music Man endorsement, a feature in Premier Guitar and prizes from Guitar Center.

“We’re tremendously honored to be associated with Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. Supporting the Antigua Foundation, in addition to Eric Clapton’s charitable efforts is very important to Ernie Ball,” notes Brian Ball of Ernie Ball Inc. “Offering an unsigned band this tremendous opportunity to play live alongside the collection of legendary guitar players is also something we’re very excited about.”

Fans have the opportunity to help choose the winner by voting for their favorite artists at www.playcrossroads.com. The 500 bands/artists with the most votes will be reviewed by a panel of judges comprised of Ernie Ball representatives and contest sponsors. The judges will select the winning artist/band based on criteria including musicianship, originality, authenticity and songwriting.

The winner of the first Ernie Ball Play Crossroads contest–who performed at the last Crossroads Guitar Festival, held in 2007–was then 16-year-old prodigy Tyler Dow Bryant. Bryant went on to work with Paul Simon, Edie Brickell, Chris Duarte, Brent Rowan, Albert Lee, Steve Lukather, Don and Donnie Nelson, Sean Neff, Wes Jeans, Alan Haynes, Dickey Betts and many others.

Announcing “Zac Gives Back”

Off the heels of last week’s insane media coverage of our initial endorsement by celebrity actor/singer Zac Efron, we are thrilled to announce the launch of “Zac Gives Back – Support Young Adults And Give Cancer The Bird.”

ZGB is a a TwitPic photo competition in support of his cousin Emily to raise money and awareness for i[2]y. Contestants are encouraged to purchase wristbands and organize the largest crowd shot of everyone wearing the band while giving cancer the bird. The top three crowd organizers will win large-sum iTunes Gift Cards of $250, $100 and $50, respectively.

Zac’s goal is for us to sell 50,000 wristbands and elevate the cause of ‘cancer under 40′ even further into the national spotlight, where it deserves to be. It’s time. It’s our time. It’s about time.

News from Tiffany Apan
Spring is almost here and we are as busy as ever here at the Poets Labyrinth Productions headquarters.

First I give a thank you to two new radio stations spinning the tracks:
New Artist Radio
http://fburls.com/14-AKLL4bCO/t/s/txt/cid/600791/sid/119917265

WAGTi Radio which will officially go up on March 17

http://fburls.com/95-hH0x3r3n/t/s/txt/cid/600791/sid/119917265

While we’ve been getting great airplay on internet, college, and independant radio stations, mainstream radio stations have proven to be a little more difficult because, well, the music we do isn’t exactly mainstream! :) But, you can help us out a little in that department by voting for us at the following link:

http://fburls.com/28-ztOcXCfe/t/s/txt/cid/600791/sid/119917265

At this link, listen to a song in it’s entirety and rate! It’s that simple and would be greatly appreciated:)

We are also happy to announce that there will be a new release on March 15. After being released on the La Femme Electrique Compilation CD, being a country/American Finalist in the 2009 Best New Song in the World Contest, and ‘test-floating’ around on music sites like thesixtyone, uvumi, and last.fm, we have decided to release my acapella song, “Lost Little Girl” as a digital single. The song will be re-recorded courtesy of Rowen Poole and StarGlider Studios and there will also be a music video for the song as well on which we will be working with Zane Hersherberger again (of the “Ashes to Dust” and “Scarborough Fair” music videos). We are scoping out potential locations for the video and will inform you on when we shoot and release it. The song will be available through Tarnius Music, iTunes, Plugo.la, Last.fm, and more. Also, the near future will hold all the music videos being available through iTunes as well. Stay tuned for all that:)

Speaking of new releases, the song “A Prayer” from POET will be featured on what will be our 8th Compilation feature to date. It will be released through Coast2Coast Mixtapes (our second compilation with the Coast2Coast family) and we will inform you with more information upon it’s release.

We also have some shows happening starting in the spring. We didn’t really intend to make it a Tour, but I guess it sort of is! So we are simply calling it the Tiffany Apan Concert Mini Tour 2010.

CD REVIEW OF “Against The Wall”
by The Peppermint Apes

This CD is a must have! I was recently able to listen to this CD in its entirety and enjoyed every second of it! The guys have really put together a great mix of tunes here! From toe tapping tunes to melodies that touch the heart, it keeps you wanting more!

I always say that a listener enjoys the music more if he/she can perceive a message/feeling or if it makes them recollect a memory from the music and the guys have done exactly that!

These guys are on their way to being a sensation and making a BIG name for themselves because they have the passion/drive that upcoming artists need and a love for what they do!

FEEL TEAL CAMPAIGN 2010

The FEEL TEAL Ovarian cancer awareness campaign is set to start again, in 2010!

Our message still the same but with one small difference—we’re committed to raising awareness, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, until a diagnostic test has been found!

When the Feel teal campaign was originally launched, there were many great expectations.
We were putting our voices of support towards raising much needed awareness for Ovarian cancer, in hope more lives could be spared!

The campaign’s founder, Debbie Stevens, together with the Go Research Fund, Spokesman, Rick Finch & a host of other supporters all rallied for this cause with the goal of raising Awareness and much needed funding for this disease.

Worldwide, the colour TEAL was chosen to represent this cancer, though sadly, it is still yet to be widely recognised.

Globally we know to “Think Pink” for Breast cancer and there’s a constant source of funding flowing as a result.

For Ovarian cancer to achieve the same status, “Feel Teal” came into existence.
In order to promote this idea, enlisting the use of the Internet and its resources an obvious choice, and in no time the campaign began to build momentum.

We were blessed with a wonderful Spokesman- winner of seven Grammy awards, 14 BMI songwriter/arranger awards, producer, musician, songwriter and co-founder of “KC and the Sunshine Band“, Rick Finch.
Rick’s presence encouraged and inspired others, and our paths took on a new direction-Other artists were invited to join the campaign, and a new theme was introduced to include music!

The Feel Teal Club was especially designed for the general public & Artists of every industry.

Bonnaroo brings together some of the best performers in rock and roll, along with dozens of artists in complementary styles such as jazz, Americana, hip-hop, electronica, and just about any contemporary music you can think of. In addition to dozens of epic performances, the festival’s 100-acre entertainment village buzzes around the clock with attractions and activities including a classic arcade, on-site cinema, silent disco, comedy club, theater performers, a beer festival, and a music technology village. Dear Friends ~
Welcome to the February Captain’s Log.

I want to begin by thanking everyone who came out to support “Halfway to Forecastle” last month. The show sold-out for a third consecutive year, setting an attendance record for the event. Special thanks to our innovative friends at Tasman Properties, whose unique craftsmanship helped mold our vision for the show. Likewise – the relentless Forecastle Deck Crew, who traveled from all corners of the Midwest to hold it together.

Life above deck is been busier than ever, with much to update on the 2010 fest. Without further ado, here is the February scroll:

New Website
Forecastle launched a new website last month. Check er out @: http://www.forecastlefest.com. Special thanks to Jason Clark and the folks at VIA Studio for creating and executing the vision, a three-month process. We couldn’t be happier with the results.

Music and Film Submissions
Music submissions are up and running. You can apply from now through next month by visiting the website or: http://sonicbids.com/forecastle. We will select (10) artists to perform at this year’s event. All genres are accepted. If you are based in the region, there’s no reason not to apply.

Film submissions will open shortly, and cover a vast array of genres, compared to years previous. Details will be posted on the website soon. For immediate inquires, feel free to contact Derrick at film@forecastlefest.com

Google Partnership
Forecastle has signed a deal with Google | YouTube to broadcast footage of the 2010 festival. In addition, we plan to open our archives a bit to the hundreds of hours of video footage we have collected and edited since 2002. The new channel is http://youtube.com/forecastlefest. Login and become a subscriber today. We will begin building the channel soon.

2010 Festival
No more waiting, now is time for you to send us your input on what YOU want to see at Forecastle 2010. While you’re thinking, below is a little sneak-preview of how our brains have been working the past couple months:

Music: By the end of 2010, there’s a strong likelihood we will have covered every rock and electronic music genre possible, over the course of the past nine years. Our focus and commitment for this year is to build upon the successful foundation established last year, while continuing to evolve and expand our tastes to bring new folks into the castle experience.

Art:
Under the leadership and determination of Mike Ratterman (longest-serving deckmate), the art pillar is set to take a major leap forward in 2010. With full funding, Mike predicts it will be “the best exhibition” in the festival’s nine-year history. Last fall both of us went back to the drawing board, looking closely at the 2005-2006 glory days, and what made those exhibitions so unique and special. With a new committee of renowed regional curators and a fresh new concept, expect big things here.

Activism: We are committed to expanding the activism portion 3X for the 2010 festival. Each year we try to take a significant leap forward from the year previous, and 2010 will be no different. We assembled a series of focus groups last fall, to develop a plan that would enhance the third pillar of the event. National, regional, and local entities will all be involved, with a strong focus on engaging, interactive, educational programming and activities. Stay tuned…

Facebook Cities
Forecastle is “Where the Midwest Connects®” and over the past couple years we have launched over a dozen Facebook Cities with communities of over 10,000 fans. Now is time for you to take the reigns and help us expand to even more Midwestern towns and villages. The Facebook cities are places where locals can gather around the well, express their common interests, and spread the good word about life aboard the Forecastle Ship. If you are interested, please see the list of current cities @: http://forecastlefest.com/connect/participating-cities/ . If you don’t see your listed, by all means, become an administrator and we will develop one for you! (and yes, there are plenty of perks and incentives to doing so…)

Camp Captain
Last but not least, Forecastle has a new headquarters on River Road, less than (10) minutes from the Waterfront. After 25 inspiring years in the Highlands, we traded city lights for country stars. My deepest appreciation of Christy and Owsley for giving me this amazing opportunity, and Underwired Magazine for a great write-up in this month’s issue.

I also want to thank Greater Louisville Inc. for making asking me to accept the 2009 Fleur-de-Lis Award, a lifetime achievement honor. Previous recipients include Denny Crum and My Morning Jacket. I will accept it with our partner Steve Liberatore of Nederlander Entertainment. The award is testament to the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice of the hundreds of people and companies who have made this dream a reality, and continue to standby us as we work to grow, evolve, and expand the Forecastle experience to people of all ways and walks of life.
Thanks again everyone ~ jkm

**************************************
THE FORECASTLE FESTIVAL is where the Midwest connects®. Founded in Louisville, KY, the annual gathering is equal parts Music, Art, and Activism. A symposium for musicians, artists, and environmentalists, Forecastle connects the progressive Midwest. The 2010 fest is expected to draw over 25,000 patrons to the Louisville Waterfront ~ part of a scenic, $60 million dollar riverfront investment which attracts 1.5 million visitors a year. With national headliners and expanded line-ups, the festival will provide an unforgettable experience for all Forecastle travelers, converging in Louisville from the Midwest and beyond.

Simon Cowell, Sony ink global joint venture
Five-year deal, pooling assets of global TV formats

LONDON — Just days after he announced he was quitting “American Idol,” Simon Cowell announced a new five-year joint venture with Sony that will pool the television and music assets of global TV formats “The X Factor” and “Got Talent,” as well as a musical roster including such stars as Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle and Il Divo.

The deal will see Cowell regain partial control of the assets of his production company Syco, until now 100% owned by Sony.

Under the terms of the new deal, Sony will swap its 100% ownership of Syco for a 50% share in a wider media and entertainment vehicle, which will also count British retail magnate Philip Green as a shareholder and advisor to Cowell.

The deal marks a new start for Cowell, the Pied Piper of entertainment, whose acerbic commentary, rolling eyes and merciless critiques have crushed the dreams of hundreds of eager hopefuls and won ratings avalanches on both sides of the Atlantic.

It sees him break from his long term collaborator/competitor Simon Fuller, creator of the Spice Girls pop sensation and power behind 19 Entertainment, which produced the “Idol” format that preceded the juggernaut of “X Factor” and saw Cowell become the highest paid star of reality television.

Fuller last week unveiled details of his new venture XIX, which will see him retain some rights to “Idol” as well as provide a launch for new film projects, including the upcoming “Bel Ami” starring Robert Pattinson.

Based in London and L.A., the new Cowell-backed Syco is pledged to produce a broader and more international range of music, film and entertainment fare, leveraging the artists discovered as part of the talent show formats and developing new media and roadhsow vehicles.

The forthcoming Fox version of “The X Factor,” due to air in the fall of 2011 with Cowell as executive producer and judge, is included in the deal. The global show airs in 17 countries, with the U.K. version securing over 19 million viewers in its most recent finale, while the “Got Talent” format is on air in 27 countries worldwide.

“I have had a fantastic relationship with Sony for many years and I’m delighted we are launching this venture together,” Cowell said in a statement.

Under the new partnership Cowell — who has worked with artists selling more than 150 number one records and 180 million album sales — will aim to “significantly grow the Syco venture, said Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, CEO, Sony Music Entertainment.

Michael Jackson 3D mini-movie to debut at Grammys

Look for a special moment at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on Sun. Jan. 31, 8 – 11:30 p.m. ET/PT, featuring a never-before-seen 3-D mini-movie for Michael Jackson’s Earth Song.

It was created by Jackson as the centerpiece of his This Is It tour, but was never seen. The song has a strong theme about the future of the planet, and Jackson saw it as a unique opportunity to deliver a message to millions of people who would have seen him on tour, organizers say.

Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Carrie Underwood, and Usher will sing – along with the voice of Jackson – in a tribute to the star.

Thousands of fans and Elvis Presley’s family come out to celebrate his 75th birthday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — About 3,000 fans joined Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie and Elvis Presley’s grandkids Friday at Graceland to celebrate what would have been the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s 75th birthday.

An international contingent of fans came to commemorate the event. Some came from as far away as Europe, while other fans were right from the King’s adopted hometown of Memphis, where he died at Graceland in 1977 at the age of 42.

“I had to come. This is a special day. Seventy-five years is a wonderful period in Elvis’ life. I’m out here to support Priscilla and Lisa Marie, and I think so much of them and respect them and their family,” said Memphis resident Roger Harvey.

“It means everything to be here. You’re counting the days down until you can get on that plane,” said Craig Smith of Britain.

For Priscilla Presley, Presley’s ex-wife and mother of his only child, Lisa Marie, the day was “bittersweet.”

“It’s very difficult for me to even fathom that it’s been 75 years for him. It’s certainly bittersweet,” she said.

“Elvis has got the greatest fans. All of us here at Elvis Presley Enterprises are always amazed at the support, the loyalty. I mean, they have certainly helped his legacy be where it is today, there is no doubt,” she added.

She said Presley probably wouldn’t have made a big fuss over the milestone.

“Elvis wasn’t really big on having a whole lot of people, he liked it a little more intimate. He would definitely bring in family of course, friends, very close, intimate friends that he’s had more many years,” she said. “That’s what he really enjoyed the most is people that he knew and friends that he had for gosh, going back to high school years.”

At the Graceland ceremony, two of his grandchildren cut a birthday cake that was later shared with the crowd.

When asked what went through her mind at that moment, Priscilla Presley said: “I thought, my gosh, if Elvis only knew that he would have such beautiful grandchildren, so supportive to him, and how beautiful they are. It is bittersweet. He would have been very, very proud, absolutely very proud of his grandchildren.”

HAPPY 66th BIRTHDAY- KEITH RICHARDS

keith-richards-and-the-rolling-stones-biography21-298x300

Keith Richards
Born December 18, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, on the southern outskirts of London. The only child of Bert Richards and Doris Dupree Richards. When he was just an infant, his family had to be temporarily evacuated from their home during the Nazi bombing campaign of 1944.

Keith Richards is an internationally recognized iconic figure in contemporary culture and popular music as a singer, guitar player, songwriter, film actor, public figure, and a founding member of The Rolling Stones. As a guitarist, Richards is mostly known for his innovative rhythm playing, but is even more legendary for his near-miraculous ability to survive the most debauched excesses of the rock & roll lifestyle.

With songwriting partner and Rolling Stones lead vocalist Mick Jagger, Richards has written and recorded hundreds of songs, fourteen of which are listed by Rolling Stone magazine among the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/11028260/the_rs_500_greatest_songs_of_all_time/

Since The Rolling Stones were formed in 1962, Richards and Jagger were continuously absorbing from many musical styles and assimilated various genres and artistic influences, ultimately creating their very own inimitable style. Together they undergone transformation from semi-amateur local musicians to the leading international superstars. Both Richards and Jagger became poster boys for excess, however, they had survived ups and downs in their careers and personal lives, and remained the core of the band.

The Rolling Stones have released 55 albums of original work and compilations, and sold over 200 million records word-wide during their career.

Keith Richards is working on his autobiography, which is scheduled for release in 2010.

BANDCHALLENGE

619666

Hey guys long time no speak, how are you all. The last month has actually started turning around really well. It feels like Rich and Gez have always been a part of this band, and we are all having so much fun at the moment.

We have our first gig together coming up in The Barfly in Cardiff, Wales on the 18th of December, and I’m really looking forward to it.
Get your tickets here: http://bensem.com/fr_store.cfm

I can’t wait to play “Western Lights” with the new line up, but more importantly I can’t wait to play the brand new songs live. All proceeds from the show will go towards the recording of the new singles. We have been locked away in the practice room, and things are really starting to click. I really hope that you are going to like the new music.

Western Lights is released on Play.Com tomorrow, along with Itunes in Mexico and HMV.com.

You can also get Western Lights on your mobile phone at, Nokia Store, Orange, Vodafone and 3 mobile network. You can also listen to us on Spotify :) And we have autographed merchandise at our store
http://bensem.com/fr_store.cfm

Some of our fans came up with an amazing idea, that I wanted to share with you. They are calling it the “I’m a BenSem Music Junkie” declaration. They are asking people who love our music to make small video’s from their homes, you can see some here http://www.youtube.com/user/Thebensemmusicjunkie they are declaring to the world that they are BenSem Music Junkies. Very rock and roll boosh

I saw the videos and thought that it would be great to make a montage of all of them and make it into our next video for the new single. It is a great idea, and I want to help them as much as possible. You will see everyone in the video is holding a piece of paper with a name on it. The name is of a person that they have lost, someone they have loved, and would love to “see again”. The new single is called “See You Again” so I thought what a poetic real way to get this point across, lets put all this into a video. The reason we are still here, why I am still here is because of our fans and friends, so I love the idea of having you all in our new music video. Let me know what you think.

I’m going to go now, I’m off to sit down and go through some music.
I can’t wait to meet you all at a gig soon, and next year I can feel it, it is going to happen.
Love you all

Julian Lennon and James Scott Cook Raise Awareness and Funds for Lupus Research

Proceeds from the song, “LUCY,” will be donated to the Lupus Foundation of America and the St. Thomas Lupus Trust

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ —
Julian Lennon, son of the legendary John Lennon, and James Scott Cook announced today that they will donate a portion of the proceeds from their song, “LUCY,” to fund research on the disease lupus. The song was created to honor Cook’s 92-year-old grandmother, Lucy Cook, who has been living with lupus for years and Lucy Vodden, a childhood friend of Lennon’s who recently passed away at the age of 46 after a long battle with lupus. Vodden was also the subject of a drawing that Julian created which inspired his father to write the memorable Beatles hit song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” Proceeds donated from the song, “LUCY,” will be shared equally by the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. (LFA), and the St. Thomas Lupus Trust in London.

Sandra C. Raymond, LFA President and CEO, issued the following statement:

“We thank Julian Lennon and James Scott Cook for their generous support, which will not only help fund lupus research, but will also go a long way to help raise awareness and draw international attention to this perilous disease. All proceeds from the song will be restricted for use in LFA’s National Lupus Research Program, Bringing Down the Barriers, which directs grants to lupus researchers in academic medical centers throughout the United States for research on the causes and epidemiology of lupus, pediatric lupus, lupus kidney disease, cardiovascular disease in lupus, adult stem cell transplantation, novel approaches to the development of new treatments, among other areas.

“We applaud Julian and James for calling attention to the urgent need for lupus research. It has been more than 50 years since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new treatment for lupus. In fact, to date there has never been a drug approved specifically for lupus, since the disease was discovered more than a century ago. Physicians who treat people with lupus often must rely on medications that have toxic side effects; some side effects are worse than the disease itself. For people with lupus, finding less toxic therapies is vital to not just their quality of life, but for many, their survival.

“Lucy Vodden and Lucy Cook represent people with lupus around the world who are either living with lupus, or have succumbed to the disease, demonstrating the varied and sometimes devastating impact that lupus can have on individuals and their families. This life altering disease typically strikes young women in their childbearing years, yet a public opinion survey demonstrated that 80 percent of women know little or nothing about the disease.

“Our hope is that the efforts of Julian and James will inspire others, and serve as a catalyst for the public to join us in working to change the future for the millions of people around the world like Lucy. We encourage people to pay tribute to both of these women and all those living with lupus by downloading the song ‘LUCY’ through iTunes beginning December 15, 2009.”

About Lupus

Lupus is an acute and chronic, autoimmune disease in which the immune system is unbalanced, causing inflammation and tissue damage to virtually any organ in the body. Its health effects include heart attacks, strokes, seizures, miscarriages, and organ failure. Ninety percent of the people with lupus are women, and it is two to three times more common among African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans, and Asians. Lupus is unpredictable and potentially fatal, yet at present no satisfactory treatment or cure exists.

About the LFA

The LFA is the foremost national nonprofit voluntary health organization dedicated to finding the causes of and cure for lupus, and providing support, services, and hope to all people affected by lupus. Founded in 1977, the LFA has a nationwide network of nearly 300 chapters and support groups and operates programs of research, education, and advocacy. Grooveshire
Debut EP-American Son

Flip Side to Music recently had the pleasure of listening to this EP from this Cincinnati, Ohio band and from the jams of Southern type Rock, to the more funky rhythms, to the bluesier guitar riffs, I found it giving a taste of the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but with their own unique twist making me anticipate the next song and where it would lead me rhythm wise and the emotion it would touch my soul with.

I think listeners have to be touched by an artist’s music and to be able to relate and feel the song. The blend of music the guys use on the EP has something that almost everyone can feel and enjoy, it is incredible and definitely a unique sound that I can see taking these guys far!

In Flip Side to Music’s opinion this music really rocks!

Herzog Is Hallowed Ground
Historical marker honors recording studio with vital ties to Hank Williams and popular music’s very evolution

art19322nar

Well, I’m in love, I’m in love, with a beautiful gal
But she don’t care about me
Lawd, I tried and I tried, to keep her satisfied
But she just wouldn’t stay
So now that she is lea-eav-in’
This is all I can say…
I got the lovesick blues

— Hank Williams, “Lovesick Blues”

It was a quirky arrangement of a 20-year-old Tin Pan Alley song. It had no bridge. The first verse was used as a chorus; the original chorus became the first verse. There were weird chord changes along with falsetto and yodeling vocals.

A session player thought Hank Williams had lost his mind. “You ain’t gonna release that are you, Hank?”

Release it he did. “Lovesick Blues” became the most important song in Hank Williams’ career and one of the most influential singles in Country and Pop music history.

And it was recorded in downtown Cincinnati on Dec. 22, 1948, at E.T. Herzog Recording Company, on the second floor of 811 Race St. In all, the “father of contemporary Country music” would record eight songs at two sessions at the Herzog studio, including “My Bucket’s Got a Hole in It” and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”

Yes, before Nashville had Music Row — and even before legendary King Records made its mark — Cincinnati had Herzog on Race.

“It’s a lost history of Cincinnati,” says Brian Powers, music archivist at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County who’s become the expert on the studio, with a labor-of-love research effort that documents many Herzog sessions. “It’s our music heritage and should be remembered. It shows the city’s contribution to Country and popular music before Nashville had it cranked up.”
A two-sided historical marker will be unveiled Sunday afternoon on Race Street in front of the building that housed Herzog, now home to CityBeat and ArtWorks. That evening’s Cincinnati Entertainment Awards will pick up the celebration, adding another link between the area’s current musicians and their historical counterparts.

The marker project was sponsored by the Cincinnati USA Music Heritage Foundation, which won approval from the City of Cincinnati Planning Commission. Last year the foundation was instrumental in placing a similar marker at the Brewster Avenue site of King Records.

From the Nation’s Station to Herzog Studios

Herzog was Cincinnati’s first commercial recording studio. Powers thinks its ultimate significance for the local music scene is “it turned Cincinnati into a recording town instead of a radio town.”

Groundbreaking tunes in Country, Bluegrass and R&B were cut at Herzog — songs that would become templates for their genres. Just to list a few of the seminal sessions:

• Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs recorded “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” one of the most recognizable Bluegrass tunes, in December 1949.

• The Delmore Brothers cut “Freight Train Boogie,” bringing the boogie woogie Blues sound to the hillbilly market in what some call the first Rockabilly song.

• “The Honeydripper,” a song cited by musicologists as laying the foundation for R&B, was recorded in 1945 by Bullmoose Jackson.

• Other artists who recorded at the studio include Homer and Jethro, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Judy Perkins, Grandpa Jones, Red Foley and Moon Mulligan.

The Herzog story — its rise and fall — can’t be told without telling the WLW Country & Western story. By the late ’30s the “nation’s station” was booming out a signal of 500,000 watts, but owner Powel Crosley was under government pressure to justify why he deserved that much wattage.

“His argument was, ‘We are in the center of the population area of the country and there are so many rural areas that don’t have radio service. We are providing that for them,’ ” says Mike Martini of Media Heritage Inc. “Crosley realized he needed to beef up his rural programming to justify that argument.”

WLW began to hire the finest Country & Western singers and musicians in the land. At one point it produced two weekly barn-dance shows, Midwestern Hayride and Boone County Jamboree. One of the great session bands in Country music history, the Pleasant Valley Boys, moved here from Nashville in 1948, lured by the offer to be the house band for the TV version of Midwestern Hayride.

In 1945, WLW engineer E.T. “Bucky” Herzog started a little side project, opening a recording studio just around the corner from the station, which back then was at Ninth and Elm. He realized the cream of the Country music crop was coming through WLW every week to perform and thought maybe they’d want to record.

It was the same thinking that sparked Syd Nathan to found King Records in 1943. But Nathan wouldn’t have a recording studio at his Evanston complex until 1947, so he sent many artists down to Race Street and Bucky Herzog.

Hank Williams came here in 1948 specifically to record with the renowned Pleasant Valley Boys. He’d worked with them previously when they were in Nashville, producing a couple minor hits. He was still looking for the big breakthrough.

They cut three songs in a session booked for three hours. When Williams found he had extra time, he said he wanted to record “Lovesick Blues,” which he’d been performing in concert and on radio shows. His manager, Fred Rose, hated the song. When he learned Williams wanted to cut it, he fumed out of the studio saying, “You got 30 minutes left in the session. Don’t go over the time.”

One take was enough. In Williams’ yearning, pleading voice, it became a signature song.

Released in spring of 1949, “Lovesick Blues” was No. 1 for 16 weeks, earning Williams a performance at the Grand Ole Opry in June that received an unprecedented six encores. The song became the quintessential ballad of lost love, covered by dozens of singers across all genres, ranging from Little Richard and Arlo Guthrie to Linda Ronstadt and LeAnn Rhimes.

Williams would return to Herzog to recapture the magic with the Pleasant Valley Boys in August 1949, recording four more songs.

Meanwhile, Herzog continued to crank out recordings. Record labels like Columbia, RCA and Mercury would send their artists to town. Along with King — which was becoming the country’s most successful independent label — Cincinnati indeed had become Music City.

Herzog outlasted Hank … barely

By the early ’50s, Herzog’s glory days were ending (although King’s were just beginning with its incredible R&B lineup). Studios had opened in Nashville and the emerging Country stars didn’t need to travel to record. And Nathan had built his own studio.

Most significantly, WLW began firing its live musicians, many heading to Nashville, removing the talent pool that fueled Herzog. Crosley sold his station to Avco in 1953, and the new owners started making cuts (in what seems to be a familiar story in corporate broadcasting).

“They looked at other DJs in town spinning discs and making all that money,” Martini says. “Here WLW was with this huge staff of something like 100 musicians. I’m sure they said, ‘Why are we spending all this money when one guy can spin discs?’ ”

Bucky Herzog sold the studio, and the new owner moved it to Mount Adams, mainly doing commercial production. It was gone by 1955.

Yet the studio survived Hank Williams, who would die at age 29 on New Year’s Day 1953, officially of heart failure, likely brought on by alcohol abuse and injections of vitamin and morphine shots. He passed away in the back seat of his chauffeured Cadillac on his way to a concert in Canton.
